What to visit

Lucca, 9 km. This medieval splendid jewel is a unique experience: walk along the narrow streets and hire a bicycle to go round the medieval circle walls. You can find two rent-a-bike places in piazza Santa Maria, behind Borgo Giannotti. Along the walls stop for a coffee at San Colombano’s rampart, it’s been recently renewed.

Dining out: you can taste typical Tuscan food at: “La buca di Sant’Antonio” (quite expensive, about 40-50 euros each), gli “Orti di via Elisa” (about 20-30 euros each), “Giulio” in Pelleria (about 15-25) and “Leo”, piazza della Misericordia (about 10-20). The difference costs are due to the setting and quality of food.

Typical shops and delicacies: “Veneta” ice-cream shop, down the “Caffè delle Mura” rampart, “Pinelli” patisserie, famous for strudels; you can buy “buccellato” (aniseed and raisins cake) at Taddeucci, in Piazza San Michele. You must also try focaccia (flat bred) at “Giusti” bakers in Chiasso Barletti and pizza at “Felice” in via Fillungo.

Outside Lucca there are superb historical mansions (ville lucchesi): “Villa Reale” in Marlia whose park is a fine example of the Italian neoclassical garden, villa “Mansi” in Segromigno and villa “Torrigiani” in Camigliano.

30 km. A daily trip: enjoy a day out at the seaside in Viareggio or Forte dei Marmi in a lido where you can hire deck chairs and umbrella  and walk down the beautiful promenade of Forte dei Marmi, one the most famous seaside resort where celebrities find peace and relaxation as it is fashionable and at the same time secretive. Try focaccine mignon at “Valè” baker, in the main square, they’re really tasty.

30 km.Take your children to Collodi, the birthplace of a famous writer for children, whose book, “Pinocchio” is translated in many languages. The park dedicated to him shows the story’s main character and you can often see puppet performances. The village which also has a baroque mansion whose garden is accessible.
